The Rise of Competitive Gaming & E-Sports

Featuring Damien “Damdai” Dailidenas, winner of the 25th Anniversary Street Fighter II Tournament (starting @ 4:03)

As games have increased in sophistication, they have become a stage for ever higher displays of human skill and brilliance. The result is a tier of the gaming world filled with startling disciplined, talented, and highly competitive players. Born out of arcade tournaments and LAN parties, the world of competitive gaming is now entering a mature phase, featuring major global events attended by thousands and watched by millions online. With valuable sponsorship and prize money of increasing value, competitive gaming is claiming a space similar to that of traditional sports. This new industry is still in its early stages, developing broadcasting models and negotiating the culture of its widening audience. But whether it’s fighting games or MOBAs, the players and spectators are passionate, and individuals and leagues are working hard to elevate e-sports into the highest echelons of human achievement.

Help Save Super Arcade!

Super Arcade, the home of Wednesday Night Fights, The Runback, and the foundation of the SoCal Super Turbo scene is going through some rough financial times right now. The transistion period between the previous owner has taken affect and has set back the arcade.

Luckily, there’s still hope for this bastion of Southern California competition. A donation drive was recently set up through WePay that asks patrons of the facility and members of the wider fighting game community to help Watson gain some ground against the mounting expenses. The donation drive ends on the 14th at 12PM and those who donate will be entered into a number of special drawings for various Mad Catz items that will be broadcast live on Thursday or Friday after the fundraiser ends.

The new owner, and long time supporter of the SoCal ST scene,  Mike Watson had this to say:

“During this entire ruckis I have learned many things, and although I am new to the arcade ownership side of things, I have always been a people person and dealt with my customers very well over the years. When times are tough people show their true colors. I personally ran a charity tournament for someone I genuinely cared about and it felt awesome. Now I am running one for myself and the community and have mixed emotions. The goal here is to provide a future for game lovers and the FGC here in Southern California and hopefully this will make it happen. After all prizes are given out I want to have a couple “customer appreciation days” where I can turn everything on free play and give back to the community once again that have stood by me and supported me during my rough time. I promise Super Arcade will rise again and better than ever once all this is complete. I have a deep passion for fighting games and a great love for the community involved. Thank you all once again for the support and hope you get something out of Super Arcade, whether it be countless hours of hanging out with friends here, competition from our tournaments, or even being at home and stream monstering it up with levelup and iebattlegrounds. As long as someone is enjoying and benefiting from my hard work and that of my crew, that is enough to make my long hours and rough nights till 4am all worth while.”

Stay strong FGC and lets push for an even stronger future.”

Alex Valle, who organizes Wednesday Night Fights and The Runback at Super Arcade had this to say:

“Super Arcade, the home of Weds Night Fights and The Runback, is going through some rough times right now. The transition period from the previous owner has taken effect this year which has unfortunately set back the arcade. Mike Watson and I are working around the clock to make sure the SoCal community and fans around the world have a place we can all level up from. If you’d like to support, please visit https://www.wepay.com/donations/save-super-arcade. Thanks goes to everybody for their continued support and we’ll have updates as they come in.”

ST takes the lead for the 8th game at EVO!! – Today is the last day to donate!

EVO 8th game donation drive update!

Super Turbo was lingering down around 5th place for pretty much the entire time since the donation drive started.  Suddenly, in the past few days, and more specifically on Wednesday, it appears a mysterious benefactor or benefactors have dropped a number of huge donations for ST.  Early in the day, ST sat at approximately $10k.  As Wednesday ended on the West Coast, the mysterious benefactor propelled ST into first place!  Update at 8:45AM PST – SSMB: Melee has about a $1300 lead over ST ($36,834.00 to $35,500.53).  All three games, ST, SSBM: Melee and Skullgilrs are expected to snipe in donations late tonight.

Papasi has put out a CALL TO ARMS last night to help the mysterious and generous benefactor’s efforts not go to waste:

“THERE IS NO GOING BACK. WE ARE ALREADY AT 33,623.41

*** I AM PLEADING FOR EVERYONE WHO CAN HELP, DONATE AS LITTLE AS $5 TO HELP US OUT, SPREAD THE WORDS ON TWITTER & FACEBOOK ***

THIS IS HOW WE STARTED IT ALL

STREET FIGHTER II

LETS GO”

A reminder that the donation drive closes TODAY (Thursday January 31st) at 11:59PM PST) so this is the LAST DAY to donate to support ST and for a great cause!

“No Guts No Glory” – Newbie GGPO Tournament

The folks over at theEBStream will be hosting an online GGPO ST tournament this Saturday afternoon, at 12pm PST. It is a character-lock, double elim tournament. All matches are 2/3, with Grand Finals being 3/5. No entry fee or prize, it’s purely for experience and fun!

Entry-level players are encouraged to join. Although it is an open tournament, I wouldn’t recommend cutthroat killers to join the fray, since that would just ruin the experience for new members of the ST scene.

Click the challonge link to register! Show up at 12pm PST at http://www.twitch.tv/theebstream for the stream and roll call.

On the US side, Damdai has confirmed that he will be attending and there are several other players who have expressed interest.
